Pensioners Robbed After Vehicle Overturns in Accident

Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal – Shocking and heart-wrenching incident on the R102 between Canelands and Verulam, two elderly citizens were targeted by ruthless thieves while trapped in their overturned vehicle. This unsettling event took place on a Wednesday afternoon, prompting a rapid response from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) and the Provincial Ambulance Service.


Passing drivers who witnessed the accident and subsequent theft immediately reached out to RUSA, desperately seeking help for the stranded victims. Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics were dispatched and arrived at the scene around 2:16 PM.

Upon arrival, paramedics from the Provincial Ambulance Service were already assisting the 76-year-old man and 54-year-old woman trapped inside the overturned vehicle. These brave individuals had gone through a terrifying experience.

The woman recalled the frightening moments when some opportunistic pedestrians exploited their vulnerable situation. While still stuck in the wreckage, these thieves boldly snatched items from the vehicle. One of them even attempted to grab the woman’s bag, but she courageously fought back, managing to keep hold of her belongings. Realizing that they had been caught in the act, the thieves quickly fled the scene, eluding capture by the arriving Reaction Officers.

Adding to the chaos, a blue Toyota Etios with significant front-end damage was discovered about 50 meters away from the overturned Mercedes Benz. The Toyota’s driver explained that his vehicle had a mechanical failure shortly after undergoing suspension repairs and wheel alignment. This unexpected malfunction caused the Toyota to veer uncontrollably into the path of the Mercedes Benz, leading to the violent overturning of the latter.

Both vehicles sustained damage in the collision, and the occupants of both cars suffered minor injuries. While the physical injuries were not severe, the psychological trauma from the attempted robbery undoubtedly left the victims deeply shaken.

Local law enforcement authorities have been notified and are actively investigating this alarming incident.
