Western Cape Prime Minister Allan Winde has stood his ground and sent an SOS to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Winde reportedly told EFF he has the power to talk to the United States.
The sentiment comes after a heated debate with the EFF.
In the past week, Winde met with officials from the US House Foreign Affairs Committee in Washington DC. But the so-called high status of the SA being a developed country is not mentioned; instead, US officials stressed that “Agoa comes with strict responsibilities that recipient nations must uphold”.
Spokesman Winde Regan Thaw said the premier “assured stakeholders of the provincial government’s deep commitment to the rule of law – a key eligibility criterion for remaining in Agoa – and resolutely opposes Russia’s illegal and brutal invasion of Ukraine”.
Ntshavheni struggled to hide his disgust at being pressed on the matter. “Premier Winde likes to be popular and he does a lot to be popular. The government has been involved in renewing Agoa since 2019,” he said.
“However, when prime minister Winde told the president he was going to the US, and he would discuss Agoa, the minister of commerce, industry and competition. [Ebrahim Patel] inform him of his progress [made]so that he does not embarrass us.”
